A Night to Remember at Plas Glas – The Unveiling of Blue Slate Gin and my Encaustic Art

Last night marked a truly special moment in Bala, as the doors of Plas Glas officially opened — the new home of Blue Slate Gin (Jin Llechen Las), lovingly created by my friend Fiona.
Nestled in the heart of this stunning and sometimes brutal landscape, Blue Slate Gin is a spirit deeply rooted in its surroundings. Every bottle reflects the wild soul of this place — crafted only with
botanicals that thrive naturally in the local environment. The flavours are bold, earthy, and pure, elevated by the freshest water drawn straight from a mountain well. It’s a gin that tells a story — of place, of care, and of connection.
Earlier this year, in January, I was honoured to create a triptych of encaustic paintings inspired by this very story. Using the raw textures and layered beauty of encaustic wax, I painted three pieces that reflect the essence of Blue Slate Gin — from the local botanicals to the slate quarrying heritage and the towering presence of Aran mountain and its lake. The paintings now sit in a purpose-built alcove within Plas Glas, perfectly framed and finally revealed to the public last night.
The evening was a joyful celebration of community, creativity and craft. Visitors explored the new distillery, admired the artwork, and enjoyed a taste of this beautiful gin — all under one roof. It felt like the beginning of something truly special for the town and for the team behind Blue Slate Gin.
I feel so lucky to have been a part of it.
Here’s to many more shared moments at Plas Glas.
