I recently completed an encaustic painting commission that was both a challenge and a joy to create. The piece was for a gentleman originally from the Isle of Man, who wanted to capture fond childhood memories of Ramsey—a place close to his heart.

One detail that stood out was his memory of the bridge in Ramsey, which he recalled as being painted yellow during his youth. He also shared stories of his father, Peter, and his beloved boat—often seen resting peacefully in the bay. Including Peter’s boat became an element of the painting, anchoring the scene in both memory and place.

Two boats on a rocky shore near a vibrant yellow and red bridge. Buildings and trees in the background under a blue sky. The eaceful setting of Ramsay and its iconic bridge.

Together, these elements formed a deeply personal and evocative composition.

Working in encaustic, with its layers of melted wax and pigment, allowed me to explore the textures and atmosphere of the scene in a unique way. It pushed me creatively, but it was one of those projects that reminded me exactly why I love what I do.

I’m happy to share that he was genuinely moved by the final piece. There’s nothing more fulfilling than knowing a painting has brought someone’s memories to life.
